Retired San Diego Federal Judge Larry Burns Joins FedArb
October 29, 2024 – FedArb is pleased to announce Hon. Larry Burns (Ret.) has joined its panel. Based in Southern California, he is a widely respected trial lawyer and federal judge, who served for nearly 30 years on the U.S. District Court in Southern California, including two years as Chief Judge. He also litigated more than 150 cases and argued 40 appeals before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Judge Burns initially worked as a civil settlement judge resolving hundreds of matters. Then as a trial judge, he presided over more than 300 federal jury trials, including high-profile cases involving elected officials, complex business and tort litigation, MDLs and class actions. Judge Burns served as a visiting trial judge in civil and criminal cases across the country, including in New York, Florida and Arizona. He also sat by designation with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, authoring eight reported appellate decisions.
Before taking the bench, he was engaged in the corporate sector, serving as corporate secretary and board member at a publicly-traded company. His corporate and business experience includes shareholder securities actions, banking and regulatory enforcement and employment litigation.
“We are very excited to have Judge Burns join our panel,” said Kennen D. Hagen, FedArb’s president and CEO. “His stature and experience resolving complex litigation matters provides the parties with valuable insights on issues that might otherwise prevent resolution of the case.”
Judge Burns earned his B.A. from Point Loma College and his J.D. from University of San Diego School of Law.
